CUB SCOUT DAY CAMPS

The 2010 Cub Scout Adventure Day Camp is fast approaching. This year’s theme will be “CSI: Cub Scout Investigators”.

The summer of 2010 is going to be packed full of fun for your Cub Scouts! Day Camp is a camping program for Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, and Webelos in our local area! Each day, Cub Scouts arrive at camp for activities, crafts, nature, sports, BB guns, archery, games and more. This year’s Cub Scout Adventure Day Camps will be held from 3 pm to 9 pm on July 9th and 9 am to 3 pm on July 10th at Patterson Lake in Dickinson. On Friday, the 9th we will have a campfire program where the boys will have a chance to cook a fun snack over an open fire. On the 10th we will conclude Day Camp with more great activities. Please plan on attending with your son- it will be a lot of fun.

If you have not yet signed up please contact Christie Chernich @ (701)290-3624 or cc.workingforlife@gmail.com to complete your registration.

FALL ROUNDUP/BACK TO SCHOOL

Cub Scout Roundtable Leaders’ Guide

“What wonderful possibilities the school year brings!! This month a Cub Scout can invite a new buddy to join the fun and adventure of Cub Scouting! Along with their new and old friends, the boys will learn the value of friendship, cooperation, and respect through games and activities. The

boys will practice the buddy system as they go on hikes, work on projects, and participate in sports.

Fall Roundup/Race into Scouting will be held September 16. For Dickinson Packs, you can plan on having your recruitment drive that night. For out of town Packs, we will try to schedule your night prior to the 16th. Please call me at 483-2488 to schedule your event. Flyers and wristbands will be ordered for you and boys talks will be completed prior to your event.

This is an exciting time as we look to add over 100 new Cub Scouts to our program. We will reach this goal only through the efforts of every Pack in our district. Thank you in advance for your efforts.

MAJOR CHANGES TO CUB SCOUTS AND TRAINING

There are several very important updates in regard to training opportunities and changes to the Cub Scout program. As many of you know Cub Scouts 2010 is our new delivery system for Cub Scouts. We have an excellent website that has information, power points, sample lesson plans, and much more outlining this program. Go to

http://www.scouting.org/cubscouts%202010.aspx  for all the information. This is a great program and it will be very beneficial for you to have all of your Pack and Den meetings laid out in one easy to use book. The Den & Pack Meeting Resource Guide will make that possible. This is much easier to use and follows the youth handbook, unlike Program Helps. A free copy of the Den and Pack Meeting Resource Guide will be provided at every Pack at the next roundtable.

Because we are changing the delivery system we are also changing many of the materials and also the training methods. Soon almost all of our leader training will be available online. This should make it much more accessible for everyone. Below is a training update from out Council Training Chairmen Doug Emerson:

“If you haven't looked at the latest training updates, check it out at www.scouting.org/Training/TrainingUpdates.aspx.  Each month they are posting new updates.

This month’s updates include an update on Cub Scouts 2010.  New Cub Scout leader materials will be available in May.  To find out more about the new delivery changes, go to www.scouting.org/cubscouts and click on "New Delivery Methods".  Also check out www.scouting.org/cubscouts2010.aspx.  Den Leader Fast Start and Cubmaster Fast Start training courses are scheduled to go live on May 3, 2010, and Leader Specific Training will be available approximately July 1, 2010.  All training courses will be online and will also be available on CD/DVD.  When these become available, copies will be sent to each District office.  The new Cub Scout Den and Pack Meeting Resource Guide (No. 34409) and the 2010-2011 Cub Scout Roundtable Guide (No. 34410) will be available to order online or in Scout shops beginning in May.  Other Cub Scout support material will have minor content changes and a new cover.”.

All of these steps are designed to make the Cub Scout program more efficient and easier to use without changing any of the core values. In fact, the core values replace the monthly themes that were used in Program Helps. The end result; how much easier will it be to recruit leaders if you can give them all of their lesson plans for the year, show them where to go online to be trained, and provide them with an annual schedule or plan of unit activities? Leaders will no longer have to attend training based on a specific time and place. They will no longer have to deconstruct the youth handbook to make sure what they are doing in the meeting allows the youth to advance. All of the themes, handbooks, training materials, and lesson plans will work together to make Scouting bettter then ever.

Look for more updates in the near future and please review the materials that are now available. Also, please plan on attending a Webinar to review all of these changes.

ROUGHRIDER ROUNDUP

Please mark your calendars and plan on attending the annual Roughrider Roundup lawn social. This year’s event will be held at the home of the Dickinson State University’s president, Robert McCallum, and will be September 9th. For those that have not attended in the past, the Roughrider Roundup is held to financially support Heart Butte Scout Reservation and to insure the future of Scouting in SW North Dakota. Tickets are 25 dollars each and can be obtained by contacting Clyde Frank at 483-3378 or Bill Anderson at 483-2488.

HISTORICAL MERIT BADGE PROGRAM

For the 100th Anniversary Celebration, four vintage merit badges are being released for the centennial celebration year only. These merit badges give Boy Scouts the hands-on opportunity to experience the past of Scouting while learning how our world has changed in the last 100 years.

These four Merit Badges are; Signaling, Tracking, Pathfinding, and Carpentry. They will count for rank advancement and feature a special gold border. Please consider taking advantage of this limited offering. This is another great opportunity for the Boy Scouts in your Troop to take part in the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.

UNIT NEWS ITEMS

Do you have something news worthy happening in your pack, troop, or crew?  The Roughrider District would like to encourage all units to share specific items of interest with the district. This can be related to unit activities, outings, or just good ideas. This information will allow us to spread good program ideas to other units throughout our district.

If you have photos of your Scouts doing something fun, please email them to Bill for next months Northern Sky Hi-Lites!

WHERE DO YOU GET HELP, SUPPORT AND CONTACT INFORMATION?

The District Web Page of course! Go to www.nlcbsa.org, then click on districts, then Roughrider and you will have the information you need.  To post news items, accomplishments, activities, or any other information you would like to share with the District, contact Dann Greenwood at (701) 483-8589 or grlawdg@ndsupernet.com. There is even a place to post your unit’s pictures!

VOLUNTEER LEADER TRAINING

Do you have trained leaders presenting the Cub Scout and Boy Scout Program to your youth?  Training is essential to a Quality Unit and the effective delivery of the Scouting Program to the youth.  Training is what allows the adult leaders of your unit the best opportunity to deliver the best possible program to our youth.  Please let us know who from your Pack or Troop needs to be trained and we will work with you to set up the appropriate training course.

If you want more information or to schedule training for your unit contact Jim Fahy at 483-6548 or titaneers@goesp.com .
