Heart Butte Work Weekend Is A Success!

Scouts and Scouters from the Roughrider and Frontier Trails Districts gathered on a beautiful spring weekend to enjoy themselves and prepare our facilities for another season of camping. Troops began arriving at Heart Butte Boy Scout Reservation on the shores of Lake Tschida Friday evening to participate in the joint Work Weekend / Frontier Trails Spring Camporee. A total of 69 Boy Scouts, 7 Webelos Scouts, and 46 Scouters from the two districts participated in the activities.

Saturday morning dawned a beautiful, cloudless day, with just a slight breeze to unfurl the United States flag as it was being raised. After the flag ceremony some Scouts moved on to Camporee activities such as fishing, cooking, and scoutcraft skills. Other Scouts and Scouters began camp cleanup activities. Troop 6 and Pack 125 spent the morning planting 108 spruce, pine, and plum trees in three areas of camp to extend shelterbelts and form an arc of trees lining the flag field. Throughout the day Scouts and Scouters rotated among the Camporee activities and camp cleanup. Adult volunteers worked on the weekend’s two major projects – removing the sides from a shelter in Beaver Bay campsite to enable them to be redesigned and rebuilt, and stripping the paneling and insulation from the Health Lodge walls due to mouse infestation.

Following is a list of projects completed during the 215 hours of service on Saturday:

Removed sides from shelter in Beaver Bay.

Stripped paneling and insulation from Health Lodge walls.

Planted 108 trees.

Did spring cleaning in the main lodge building.

Cleaned the amphitheatre / campfire area.

Cleaned the chapel area.

Cleaned the shoreline.

Cleaned the archery and rifle range areas.

Repaired light fixtures and other small maintenance items in the main lodge.

Replaced a door on the seasonal shower building.

Following a day of fun and service, most Scouts and Scouters enjoyed good outdoor cooking in their campsites. The volunteers who were not associated with the Camporee (and a few who were) enjoyed a steak dinner provided by the Northern Lights Council and prepared by Eloise Leggate, our staff cook for the weekend, who kept us well fed from morning till night.

The Northern Lights Council and Heart Butte Boy Scout Reservation Rangers would like to thank all those who helped make this weekend a success! Without you our camp would not be the sparkling facility it is. All Scouts who use this camp throughout the year will appreciate your efforts.
